“Wellspring came out of a search for inspiration and renewal within the demands of everyday life, where the boundaries between home and work often overlap and bleed into one another.

My paintings imagine places that feel familiar, yet strange. They have a dreamlike quality, existing somewhere outside of ordinary time and place. I’m interested in creating worlds that feel complete in themselves, that exist independently of the viewer. They don't tell a particular story or ask anything of you. You can enter them and spend time there, but they remain their own places, with their own sense of mystery.

Perhaps part of their appeal is that they offer an experience so different from the demands of everyday life. So much of our time is spent responding to things, producing, caring and meeting expectations. These landscapes offer somewhere to rest your attention, to become absorbed in something beyond yourself. They don't necessarily offer answers or reassurance. They simply exist, and you are free to spend time within them.

For me, a wellspring is a source of something sustaining, something you can return to and draw from. The paintings are moments of pause along a longer journey, like stopping to take in the view on a difficult hike. The journey continues, but for a while you can stand still and look.” - Kirsten Beets
